ECC-to-S/4HANA Migration Roles Explained: Brownfield, Greenfield, Cutover and Rollout Work in 2026
S4 Contracts Research · Oct 14, 2026
Ninety-four live SAP postings are explicitly about ECC migration. Here is what brownfield, cutover and rollout roles actually involve, which pay best, and how to position for each phase of a program.
One job in five on S4 Contracts is explicitly about moving a company off SAP ECC. The tags tell the story: 94 live postings mention ECC migration, 49 are brownfield conversions, 49 involve cutover, 23 are rollouts, and 19 reference RISE with SAP. With mainstream ECC maintenance ending in 2027, these are the roles that will dominate SAP hiring for the next two years, and they are not interchangeable. Here is what each phase actually needs.
Brownfield vs greenfield: the choice that shapes every role
A brownfield conversion takes the existing ECC system — data, configuration, custom code, history — and converts it in place to S/4HANA using SAP's Software Update Manager. The business keeps its processes; the technical platform changes underneath. A greenfield implementation starts a new S/4HANA system from a clean configuration and migrates only the data it wants to keep, redesigning processes along the way. A third option, selective data transition, sits between the two and is what the large consultancies increasingly sell to companies with many ECC instances.
The split on the board is roughly two brownfields for every greenfield, which matches what the market has settled on: most mid-size and large US companies have decided that a process redesign is a luxury they will take after the 2027 deadline, not before. For your career that means:
- Brownfield programs reward people who know ECC deeply. The hard work is custom code remediation (simplification-item checks, ABAP fixes for the HANA data model), business-partner conversion, the new asset accounting and material-ledger changes, and reconciling the finance data model (the Universal Journal) with what the business expects to see. Roles are titled "SAP conversion lead", "S/4HANA technical lead", "ABAP remediation developer", "FI/CO conversion consultant".
- Greenfield programs reward design skills. Fit-to-standard workshops, clean-core discipline, Fiori-first user experience, and the ability to tell a business process owner "no". Roles are titled "solution architect", "process lead", "S/4HANA functional consultant (design)".
If your experience is ten years of ECC configuration, brownfield is where you are most valuable right now, and the posted salaries agree: conversion-focused finance and supply-chain roles sit at the top half of our benchmarks.
Cutover: the highest-pressure, best-paid phase per hour
Cutover is the window — typically a long weekend — in which the old system is frozen, data is migrated or converted, the new system is validated, and the business is told it may start transacting. Forty-nine live postings name it, and they share a profile: fixed-term, explicit about weekend and overnight work, and often hourly.
The roles inside a cutover team are specific:
- Cutover manager: owns the minute-by-minute plan, the go/no-go criteria and the war room. Usually a senior project manager with at least two prior go-lives.
- Data migration lead: runs the load cycles (mock conversions, dress rehearsal, production), reconciles record counts and financial balances, and signs off that the data in S/4HANA equals the data that left ECC.
- Module cutover leads (FI/CO, MM, SD, PP, EWM): execute the functional checklist for their area — open items, in-transit stock, open sales orders, work-in-process — and validate the first transactions after go-live.
- Basis and HANA cutover engineers: the technical conversion itself, system copies, transport freezes, performance validation.
Cutover work is where experienced contractors earn the most per hour, because the employer is paying for certainty on a date that cannot move. If you have run three or more go-lives in a module, say so in the first line of your profile; it is the single most searched-for phrase in this category.
Rollout: the long tail after the first go-live
A rollout extends a working S/4HANA template to additional countries, plants or business units. Twenty-three live postings describe rollout work, and it is the most predictable employment in the SAP market: a global manufacturer rolling a template across forty plants will be hiring the same functional profiles for three to five years.
Rollout roles value a different mix than conversions do: localization knowledge (tax, legal reporting, payroll interfaces for the target country), plant-level supply-chain process knowledge, and the discipline to keep the template clean while accommodating genuine local requirements. They travel more than any other SAP role; a plant rollout means weeks on site for the go-live and hypercare.
RISE with SAP changes the Basis conversation
Nineteen postings mention RISE with SAP, the subscription under which SAP operates the S/4HANA system in the cloud on the customer's behalf. The effect on hiring is visible in our rate data: traditional Basis administration is the lowest-paid technical category on the board, because under RISE much of that work moves to SAP and its hyperscaler partner. What customers hire for instead is the layer above: landscape architecture, the RISE service-level governance, integration via BTP, and security and GRC across a hybrid estate. If your background is Basis, the roles with growth are titled "SAP cloud architect", "RISE technical lead" or "BTP administrator", and the postings reflect that.
Positioning yourself for the next two years
- Pick a phase. "S/4HANA experience" is too broad to search for. "Brownfield FI/CO conversion lead, four go-lives" is what a hiring manager types.
- Document your go-lives. Company, module, brownfield or greenfield, your role in cutover, the date. This is the single section of an SAP resume that is read first.
- Learn the simplification list. Every brownfield program needs someone who knows which ECC functions were removed or changed in S/4HANA (customer/vendor to business partner, new GL mandatory, material ledger mandatory, the credit-management move to FSCM). It is a finite body of knowledge, and it is what separates a conversion consultant from a configurator.
- Expect this to end. The 2027 deadline (2030 with extended maintenance) means conversion work peaks in 2026–2028 and then falls off. The skills that carry over are clean-core extension, BTP integration and the process redesign that companies deferred. Our guide to clean-core and BTP skills covers what to learn next.
